Give a sapling as a gift

The City of Welland, in partnership with Canada’s 150th in Welland Committee, is proud to announce a new tree planting initiative called “Welland’s Trail 150” to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday with the planting of legacy trees on Merritt Island.

Citizens are invited to purchase trees to memorialize loved ones, leave a legacy tree, support Welland’s Trail 150, or help replant trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer. For $250 (plus HST) you receive:

  • One sustainable young tree that will be planted, watered, and supported for two years by the Welland Arborist Team.
  • One plaque with a personalized dedication to a person, family, business or pet to be placed at the site of the tree.
  • An invitation to the tree-planting celebration and service on National Tree Day on September 27, 2017 that will feature the unveiling of Trail 150 with local dignitaries, members of the First Nations and Metis communities and citizens of Welland.
In addition to providing clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature, Welland’s Trail 150 will provide shade for a future generation of runners, walkers and picnickers while the Memory Trees will serve as places of reflection for citizens who have left a legacy in the City of Welland. Welland’s Trail 150 will help to replace the urban canopy that has been lost due to the Emerald Ash Borer. Approximately 1,000 trees are gone from the island and 20% of trees in Welland have been removed.

Citizens have a choice of a variety of trees to purchase, including: Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Silver Maple, Northern Catalpa, Horse Chestnut, Sycamore, Red Oak, White Oak, Kentucky Coffee, Red Maple, Hickory, Linden, Elm, Locust and White Pine.
